Ptosis is true drooping of the upper eyelid due to weakness of the eyelid (levator) muscle. Some patients think they have a cosmetic problem when they actually have a functional problem such as ptosis. Weakness and stretching of the upper eyelid muscle cause the lid margin to sit at a lower than normal level, often producing a ‘sleepy’ look. When severe, the pupil can be partially or totally covered and obstruct vision. As the muscle is now sitting higher than it should be, it tends to give people a hollowed appearance in the upper lid, and the eyebrows elevate to compensate for the weakened muscle. Reattachment of the muscle will lift the lid, fill in the hollow, and allow the brow to relax to its normal position.

Droopy, puffy or baggy eyelids can make you look older, tired and can also impair vision. Surgery can correct these problems and refresh and redefine your appearance. A drooping brow is often a contributing factor or even the main cause of upper lid problems. Dr Lamb will assess whether the brow needs elevation and, if required, a brow lift will be performed at the same time as lid surgery.

Some patients think they need eyelid surgery when they actually have a drooping brow. This surgery does not address the eyebrow problem and often leads to a less than satisfactory result. The brows are best lifted by keyhole (endoscopic) surgery with incisions made behind the hairline. Dr Lamb uses a CO2 laser in all these procedures to minimise bleeding, swelling and bruising to produce a faster recovery and better result.
